Understanding Water Quality in Bali: The Hidden Impact on Your Skin, Hair, and Well-Being

When you plan a trip to Bali, you envision lush landscapes, vibrant culture, and tranquil retreats. What you might not realize is that the quality, hygiene and microbiological load of water in Bali, particularly well water, can have significant effects on your skin, hair, and overall health. Let’s explore the nature of water in Bali, its impact on well-being, and how Zen Soul Bali properties ensure water quality and guest health is a priority through comprehensive dosing, filtration systems, and maintenance.

The Reality of Water in Bali: Hard Water and Well Water

Bali's water sources primarily include well water and the local municipal supply. Well water tends to be mineral rich [hard water] and impure [based on the lack of preventative maintenance, routine storage, distribution cleaning, and flushing], containing high levels of minerals such as iron, calcium, and magnesium and microbiological contamination. This hard and impure water can lead to various issues for both residents and visitors:

  1. Skin Irritation: Hard water can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. This is especially problematic for those with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema.

  2. Hair Damage: The minerals in hard water can weigh down hair, making it appear dull and lifeless. Over time, it can lead to hair breakage and scalp irritation.

  3. Contribution to “Bali Beli” Syndrome: Many tourists develop an upset stomach while in Bali, or, what many refer to as "Bali Beli". What many people are not aware of, however, is that water quality has a great impact on gastrointestinal illnesses.

The Importance of Comprehensive Filtration Systems

Water filters in Bali

To mitigate the adverse effects of hard and unsafe water, Zen Soul Bali properties prioritize water hygiene by implementing a comprehensive three-point filtration system. Here’s how it works:

  1. From Well to Water Tank: The first stage involves installing a 10 micron sedimentation filtration system directly at the water source. This ensures that most sediment present in well water is filtered out before the water is stored in tanks. Tanks are periodically chemically dosed to remove microbiomes.

  2. From Water Tank to Dispersion System: Once the water is in the tank, a second filtration process further filters the water [1 micron, carbon and ceramic] before it is distributed throughout the property. This stage targets any remaining impurities and ensures the water is safe for use.

  3. In the Showers: The final filtration stage incorporates point-of-use systems in showers. This guarantees that guests enjoy clean and soft water without the harsh effects of hard minerals.
