Born in 1963, Dana S. has painted since he was 14 years old. Before that, he frequently drew with a stick in the dust, or in the moist loam of the paddy fields that mirrored the world around him and provided it with sustenance. He grow up in a world of rice-growing, since his father was a farmer, in a village outside Ubud, and like so many other children in Bali, nature was his first playground. Hardly surprisingly, nature and the cycle of rice planting and harvesting has emerged as a central theme in his work of art. And his beginnings have stayed with him throughout his career as an artist, even if they have meanwhile taken on a more covert form.
